India and Malaysia share a common cultural heritage which dates back many centuries. The large migration of Indians to Malaysia in the colonial era provides an indissoluble link and today, with over 2 million persons of Indian origin, Malaysia is home to one of the largest Indian Diasporas abroad. As independent countries, India and Malaysia signed a Cultural Agreement on 30 March 1978 to further strengthen the existing cultural cooperation. A Cultural Exchange programme (CEP) between the two countries is under discussion.
Cultural troupes of traditional and folk dances, puppet, martial art, and qawali groups mostly sponsored by Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) visit Malaysia from time to time. Apart from performing at the Auditorium of the High Commission, the Indian Cultural Troupes performed in venues in Kuala Lumpur and various important cities in Malaysia. Local talents are also encouraged by the Mission to perform in High Commission’s Auditorium. Exhibitions of paintings, posters, books and crafts as well as tourism and food promotions are also organized by the Mission on a regular basis.
INDIAN CULTURAL CENTRE
The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Delhi, established the Indian Cultural Centre in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) on 5 December 2003 with the objective of strengthening cultural linkages between India and Malaysia. The Centre has been dedicated to propagating Indian culture and fostering friendship through a creative dialogue.
The Indian Cultural Centre in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) is committed to spreading awareness about the rich and diverse culture of India through varied activities such as cultural programmes, Yoga and Tabla classes conducted by teachers from India.
The Centre, housed within the High Commission premises, has become a useful platform for developing warm, people-to-people contact. The Centre has facilitated staging of various cultural performances promoted by various arts and performing clubs in the region, as also those sponsored by the ICCR.
ACTIVITIES
The Indian Cultural Centre has two teachers on its faculty who impart training in Tabla and Yoga to a large number of Malaysian and foreign nationals. These classes are held free of cost to students. The Tabla and Yoga exponents from India also participate in various cultural events organized by the High Commission of India and also conduct classes in schools in Kuala Lumpur as part of the Outreach Programmes.
